Worth the leap

Ordering a knife I'd never held felt like a risk, so I kept my expectations low. It arrived beautifully boxed, and the first tomato I cut told me everything. Easily the best knife in my kitchen.

Finally retired my old German knife

I'd used the same heavy chef's knife for fifteen years. This one is so much lighter that I didn't realise how tired my wrist used to get until it didn't.

Sharp enough to be careful with

Seriously sharp straight out of the box, so take it slow the first few days. Lovely balance and weight. One star off only because I wish I'd bought the set.

Arrived well packed, looks even better in person

Tracked the whole way and arrived in perfect condition. The Damascus pattern is even more striking in real life than in the photos.

Couldn't believe the price

I'd been eyeing Japanese knives for ages but couldn't justify the cost. Caught the clearance sale and grabbed the gyuto and a petty. Wish I hadn't waited.

Christmas present sorted

Bought it for my husband, who does all the cooking. He hasn't stopped talking about it. The box alone made it feel like a proper gift.

Handmade in Seki, Japan

Sharper, lighter, made to last a lifetime.

Razor-sharp from the very first cut

Hand-ground over a hardened VG-10 core to a fine 12–15° edge that glides straight through. No breaking in, no forcing it.

Light, and beautifully balanced

A slim blade and full-tang handle, balanced right at the bolster and noticeably lighter than a typical German chef's knife. It stays comfortable in the hand through the longest prep.

Holds its edge, backed for life

San-mai forged and hardened to 60 ±2 HRC, so the edge stays keen through months of everyday cooking. Backed by our lifetime warranty and free sharpening.

Who makes these knives?

Every blade is made in Seki, Japan, a city known for over seven hundred years of blade-making. Each knife is folded, ground, and finished by hand in a small family workshop there, then sold direct through this store with no dealer in between.

Is this real Damascus steel, or just an etched pattern?

Real. The pattern is not printed or etched on. It is 67 actual layers of steel, folded and forge-welded around a hardened VG-10 cutting core, then hand-finished in Seki so the flowing suminagashi grain runs all the way through the blade. No two are identical.

Is shipping really free?

Yes, across New Zealand. No minimum spend, no surprises at checkout.

How sharp is the edge out of the box?

Razor sharp and ready to cook. Each blade is hand-honed to a 12 to 15 degree edge before it leaves Seki, far finer than a typical Western knife, so it glides through tomatoes, fish and herbs from the very first cut.
